Bluegrass pics is born

I have been trying to decide for a while what to do with this old blog space.  It was originally a soccer blog used for my son's club soccer team, and I have left the old posts out there just for sentimental reasons.  The original URL was (and still is) 93hurricanes.blogspot.com.   I used a custom blog URL of soccer.turbeville.org as a more convenient means of access.

I have finally decided to utilize this space to merge two of my favorite hobbies: photography and bluegrass music.  For years, I have taken pictures at bluegrass shows, but really had no way to share them with others.  Now through Facebook and Flickr, I do have means to share them.

This blog will sort of serve as the portal and as a place that can be located via Google search engines. The main blog URL is bluegrass.turbeville.org.   The blog will give a few details on each bluegrass show (I may write more on new shows going forward), and then it will have links to Facebook or Flickr for the photos for each show.

This entry is being written on Oct 14, 2013, but I will post it effective Nov 1, 2012.  I will then attempt to fill in the gaps on the bluegrass shows I've attended in the past year, and link to the photos posted on Facebook or Flickr.

The Room Over Mine - Dan Paisley

The Room Over Mine - Dan Paisley

Continuing the tradition of the previous generation (Bob Paisley and the Southern Grass), Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass are the “real deal.” If you like good, traditional bluegrass, but also prefer new recordings and fresh materia

l, then this album is what you’re looking for. The best description I can think of is “Jimmy Martin meets The Johnson Mountain Boys.”

Like both Jimmy Martin and JMB, this group cuts a few country numbers with a honky-tonk swing. “I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name” was previously recorded by George Strait and Porter Wagoner, and “Raising Cane In Texas” was cut by Gene Watson. Paisley’s versions easily top the originals.

All the cuts are great, but some others that really stand out for me are “Don’t Throw Mama’s Flowers Away” and “The Room Over Mine” (Hylo Brown). And what great album would be complete without a Jimmy Martin tune; they do a great cover of “I’m Coming Back, But I Don’t Know When.” Incidentally, banjo player Bobby Lundy played with Jimmy Martin for a while.

Danny’s voice is so unique. The way he slides and steps into the notes. His singing has a raw emotion where it is obvious he feels every note he sings. With regard to instrumentation, if you like your fiddle out front, then you’ll really enjoy this album. TJ Lundy really does some fine fiddling on the album.
All in all, one of my two favorite albums released in 2008. (The other was “Leaving Town” by Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper.)

End of Youth Soccer Career and Blog

This blog was used for many years as a notification and information page for my son's club soccer team. He played his last club game on Nov 6, 2011. His last high school varsity game was on May 10, 2012.

Though this blog will be revamped for a another use, the historical soccer info will remain as a reminder of some really great memories over the years.

Farewell to the beautiful game....

State cup play-in (updated and revised!)

There is a great change for us.  I wish I had a snapshot of the league page a few days ago to see exactly what happened.  There must have been a scoring error which was later corrected.  SCUFC 93 Boys Elite has changed to 19 points (tied with us). With tie breaking procedures, we are now the 5th place team in the league (7th overall).

This now puts us playing Palmetto United Premier (formally Carolina Select.)  This was the team that beat us in in round 1 of State Cup last year.  We will likely be playing in Rock Hill instead of Greenville.

Here are the Play-in game pairings:

They have also decided to extend the play-in game range to include two weekends. Games may be played 11/27 to 12/4.  The higher seeded team gets to pick the venue while both coaches agree on date and time.

Upcoming League & State-cup Info

The league results are in, and we ended up in 6th place.  6th place is the last playoff position.
http://scysa.demosphere.com/teams/28000866/29283982-28000965/TEAM.html

The two Region III Premier teams (CESA and Palmetto United / formerly Carolina Select club) will come back for State Cup and complete the 8-team playoff bracket.   CESA is ranked higher in the Region III standings, so they will be #1.

Once the top teams are added, we'll be seeded #8. By the rules: "23-c. The highest seeded teams through number 4 will play their first round match at their home field."  It appears we will be traveling to Greenville on Dec 4th to play CESA Premier.

National Cup X Regional: Atlanta, Ga - hotel & tournament info

Sorry for the length of this e-mail.  Our team has been invited to play in the US Club regional tournament in Atlanta on October 9-10.  http://www.soccerincollege.com/TTIntro3.aspx?tid=USCLUBN&tab=1&sub=0   This will take the place of the previously planned Virginia Beach tournament.

Travel arrangements are being handled by Anthony Travel of Atlanta.  They have identified four hotels near the tournament fields for this event. By clicking on this link you can see the hotels and some basic info on the Anthony Travel web page. You can book on-line or call Anthony Travel at (800) 736-6377.   This chart shows a hotel comparison as well as distances to the fields: Hotel Amenities Comparison

I wanted to get everyone at the Homewood Suites ($89, TripAdvisor Rating) but there were only three double-bed suites left.  I got a room here and blocked the other two for our team.  (They have plenty of king suites with a pull out sofa bed if that will suite your travel needs.)

The U14 team (and Joel, I think) are staying at the Courtyard ($99, TripAdvisor Rating) so I blocked the rest of our rooms over there. I suppose the Courtyard will be the "official" team hotel, but if you prefer the Homewood or another property, those are available too.  Both of these hotels are off of I-85, but at different exits.  (As another option, the Marriott Norcross for $74 (rating) looks pretty good, but it is further from the fields and is not right on the interstate; I did not check on availability.)  All hotels will have complimentary breakfast for the tournament regardless of their day-to-day policies.

These rooms are blocked only until Friday September 17.  After that that time, you can still book on-line or by phone, but your hotel of choice, or room choice, may or may not be available.

I'd recommend doing this ASAP, especially if you're interested in the Homewood.
