One of the highlights of the show was during Dailey & Vincent's version of "More Than a Name on a Wall." As usual, they asked for veterans to stand and be honored during the song. One 88-year-old veteran, in a wheelchair on the front row, managed to get to his feet. He was soon assisted and supported by two men who walked over to help him. This caught Jamie's eye on the stage, and he was visibly moved as he sang the song and pointed to the gentleman. After the song, +Darrin Vincent came off the stage and walked over and shook the man's hand while Jamie talked to him from the stage. And that, my friends, is one of the things that makes Bluegrass music so special. It's not about a "star" on stage singing to nameless fans. It's about real people, both family and friends - on stage and off, getting together to share music and life together.

The big man with the big banjo, Steve Dilling, played his last show with IIIrd Tyme Out tonight at the 44th Annual South Carolina Bluegrass Festival in Myrtle Beach, SC. Steve joined IIIrd Tyme Out in July 1993 and has played with the band for just over 20 years. (see backstory at Ted Lehman's blog post)

+Edgar Loudermilk is also leaving after tonight's show and starting his own band. Edgar has been with the band for the past seven years.

During the set, Jamie Johnson of the +Grascals joined the band to sing "Little Girl of Mine in Tennessee."

As the showing started winding down, Steve said his goodbyes and expressed his gratitude to the band and the fans. It was an emotional time. He will certainly be missed on the stage with IIIrd Tyme Out. The band closed the show with "John and Mary," and then Steve had his own request for the encore. The first song he played in July 1993 with IIIrd Tyme Out was "I'm Leaving Detroit, I'm Headed South." Steve and the band closed the set with that same song.
It was a great concert by this group of energetic young ladies. And it was somewhat of a homecoming for Conway native and mandolinist +Jenni Lyn Gardner!

Despite the rain and drizzle, it was an incredible turnout. I've been looking forward to seeing this group live for sometime, and they did not disappoint.
Concert featured two awesome sets by Junior Sisk and Rambler's Choice. This was one of the most hard-driving, traditional bluegrass sets I've heard. Jason "Sweet Tater" Tomlin on bass really puts some energy in this music.
This outstanding, young acoustic band performed two sets on the outside covered patio. It was a very up-close and personal concert, and it was a "hometown set" for Myrtle Beach native and bassist Hasee Ciaccio. In addition to Hasee, the band also features Noah Wall on fiddle, Tommy Norris on mandolin, and new guitarist Alex Conerly.
The venue is the Poplar Knight Spot, 114 Knight St in downtown Aberdeen, NC. It is a very unique listening environment and is self-described as a "groovy gallery in a listening room that seats 120." Decorated with various pieces of living room furniture and mismatched chairs, it is only a few rows deep. It made for a very intimate concert experience.

Frank and his band put on a very entertaining and exciting progressive bluegrass show.

The Grand Ballroom line-up featured many top name Bluegrass bands, including a reunion of the fabulous Bluegrass Album Band.

Tony Rice, JD Crowe, Doyle Lawson, Bobby Hicks, Todd Phillips with guest Josh Williams took the stage as the headliner on Feb 16 for one awesome set. I was passing through the closed foyer area prior to the official door opening looking for someone, and just happened to catch a glimpse and catch the audio from the BGAB's last-minute rehearsal. Walking by and hearing cut number one off of the first album (Blue Ridge Cabin Home) was like pure magic. It was even more electric later that night when they took the stage to close the show.
It was originally a soccer blog used for my son's club soccer team, and I have left the old posts out there just for sentimental reasons. The original URL was (and still is) 93hurricanes.blogspot.com. I used a custom blog URL of soccer.turbeville.org as a more convenient means of access.

I have finally decided to utilize this space to merge two of my favorite hobbies: photography and bluegrass music. For years, I have taken pictures at bluegrass shows, but really had no way to share them with others. Now through Facebook and Flickr, I do have means to share them.

This blog will sort of serve as the portal and as a place that can be located via Google search engines. The main blog URL is bluegrass.turbeville.org. The blog will give a few details on each bluegrass show (I may write more on new shows going forward), and then it will have links to Facebook or Flickr for the photos for each show.

This entry is being written on Oct 14, 2013, but I will post it effective Nov 1, 2012. I will then attempt to fill in the gaps on the bluegrass shows I've attended in the past year, and link to the photos posted on Facebook or Flickr.
The best description I can think of is “Jimmy Martin meets The Johnson Mountain Boys.”

Like both Jimmy Martin and JMB, this group cuts a few country numbers with a honky-tonk swing. “I Thought I Heard You Calling My Name” was previously recorded by George Strait and Porter Wagoner, and “Raising Cane In Texas” was cut by Gene Watson. Paisley’s versions easily top the originals.

All the cuts are great, but some others that really stand out for me are “Don’t Throw Mama’s Flowers Away” and “The Room Over Mine” (Hylo Brown). And what great album would be complete without a Jimmy Martin tune; they do a great cover of “I’m Coming Back, But I Don’t Know When.” Incidentally, banjo player Bobby Lundy played with Jimmy Martin for a while.

Danny’s voice is so unique. The way he slides and steps into the notes. His singing has a raw emotion where it is obvious he feels every note he sings. With regard to instrumentation, if you like your fiddle out front, then you’ll really enjoy this album. TJ Lundy really does some fine fiddling on the album.
All in all, one of my two favorite albums released in 2008. (The other was “Leaving Town” by Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper.)

http://www.amazon.com/Room-Over-Mine-Danny-Paisley/dp/B0017PE9KE/ref=ntt_mus_ep_dpt_1

Turbohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05497451700424357063noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13225191.post-36750537860427661452012-05-13T00:01:00.000-04:002012-08-11T18:11:37.855-04:00Welcome to my new Bluegrass review blogMoving to another phase of life, I will eventually undertake posting articles on the subject of bluegrass. I wish I had a snapshot of the league page a few days ago to see exactly what happened. There must have been a scoring error which was later corrected. SCUFC 93 Boys Elite has changed to 19 points (tied with us). With tie breaking procedures, we are now the 5th place team in the league (7th overall).

http://scysa.demosphere.com/teams/28000866/29283982-28000965/TEAM.html

This now puts us playing Palmetto United Premier (formally Carolina Select.) This was the team that beat us in in round 1 of State Cup last year. We will likely be playing in Rock Hill instead of Greenville.

Here are the Play-in game pairings:

http://scysa.demosphere.com/schedules/Fall2010/32292513.html

They have also decided to extend the play-in game range to include two weekends. Games may be played 11/27 to 12/4. The higher seeded team gets to pick the venue while both coaches agree on date and time.
Turbohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05497451700424357063noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-13225191.post-15584363947328899692010-11-07T19:21:00.000-05:002010-11-18T19:23:55.265-05:00Upcoming League & State-cup InfoThe league results are in, and we ended up in 6th place. 6th place is the last playoff position.
http://scysa.demosphere.com/teams/28000866/29283982-28000965/TEAM.html

The two Region III Premier teams (CESA and Palmetto United / formerly Carolina Select club) will come back for State Cup and complete the 8-team playoff bracket.
