South Carolina State Bluegrass Festival - November 2013 - Myrtle Beach, SC (Day 3)

The 44rd Annual South Carolina State Bluegrass Festival

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Day 3 - November 30, 2013

One of the highlights of the show was during Dailey & Vincent's version of "More Than a Name on a Wall."  As usual, they asked for veterans to stand and be honored during the song. One 88-year-old veteran, in a wheelchair on the front row, managed to get to his feet.  He was soon assisted and supported by two men who walked over to help him. This caught Jamie's eye on the stage, and he was visibly moved as he sang the song and pointed to the gentleman.  After the song, +Darrin Vincent came off the stage and walked over and shook the man's hand while Jamie talked to him from the stage. And that, my friends, is one of the things that makes Bluegrass music so special. It's not about a "star" on stage singing to nameless fans.  It's about real people, both family and friends - on stage and off, getting together to share music and life together.

The line-up included:The Stevens Family
Marty Raybon & Full Circle
The Little Roy & Lizzie Show
Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver
Dailey & Vincent

Steve Dilling plays his last show with IIIrd Tyme Out

The big man with the big banjo, Steve Dilling, played his last show with IIIrd Tyme Out tonight at the 44th Annual South Carolina Bluegrass Festival in Myrtle Beach, SC.  Steve joined IIIrd Tyme Out in July 1993 and has played with the band for just over 20 years.  (see backstory at Ted Lehman's blog post)

+Edgar Loudermilk is also leaving after tonight's show and starting his own band. Edgar has been with the band for the past seven years.

During the set, Jamie Johnson of the +Grascals  joined the band to sing "Little Girl of Mine in Tennessee."

As the showing started winding down, Steve said his goodbyes and expressed his gratitude to the band and the fans. It was an emotional time.  He will certainly be missed on the stage with IIIrd Tyme Out. The band closed the show with "John and Mary," and then Steve had his own request for the encore.  The first song he played in July 1993 with IIIrd Tyme Out was "I'm Leaving Detroit, I'm Headed South."  Steve and the band closed the set with that same song.

Della Mae at Awendaw Green - Nov 2013

The IBMA emerging artists of the year for 2013, Della Mae, appeared at Awendaw Green in Awendaw, SC -- just behind the Sewee Outpost on Nov 6, 2013.  It was a great concert by this group of energetic young ladies.  And it was somewhat of a homecoming for Conway native and mandolinist +Jenni Lyn Gardner!

Despite the rain and drizzle, it was an incredible turnout.  I've been looking forward to seeing this group live for sometime, and they did not disappoint.
